In addition to a text by the artist and an interview, the publication offers a representative cross-section of the oeuvre of the artist, who was born in Piraeus in 1936 and lives in Rome. But also the spatial intervention that was specially designed for the MAK and gives it its name The sarcofago degli sposi is documented in detail.
Jannis Kounellis, a key figure in contemporary art and co-founder of the Arte Povera movement in Italy in the 1960s, makes themes of historical and cultural identity visible in the tension between history and the present.
Published on the occasion of the exhibition of the same name (May 5th - August 22nd, 1999) at the MAK.
Edited by Peter Noever. Texts by Peter Noever and Jannis Kounellis as well as an interview by Bettina M. Busse with Jannis Kounellis.
