Gustav Klimt: Poster for the XVIIIth Exhibition of the Association of Fine Artists of Austria, 1903
The Vienna Secession was an association of visual artists that was founded on April 3, 1897 under the leadership of the painter Gustav Klimt. The most important founding members included Koloman Moser, Josef Hoffmann, Joseph Maria Olbrich, Max Kurzweil and Josef Engelhart. The aim of this movement was to break away from the Vienna Künstlerhaus and its traditional orientation towards historicism. Its regular exhibitions were intended to bring the Viennese public closer to French modern art. In 1905, a split occurred within the movement and several members around Gustav Klimt left.
