VIENNA WORLD EXHIBITION 1873 REVISITED
Egypt and Japan as Europe’s “Orient”
On the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the Vienna World Exhibition in 1873, the MAK is addressing a critical aspect of this international prestige show: the presentation of the Orient as an Orientalist construct of the 19th century.
The exhibition VIENNA WORLD EXHIBITION 1873 REVISITED uses the example of the countries of Egypt and Japan, which were often assigned to the “Orient” in terms of cultural geography at the time. Egypt and Japan as Europe's “Orient” represent different facets of this phenomenon.
