As a co-founder of the Secession, the Wiener Werkstätte and the Austrian Werkbund, Josef Hoffmann (1870-1956) had a decisive influence on the architecture and design of Viennese modernism.

Around 1948, Hoffmann wrote his autobiography in which he recapitulated his life and described his career. The reader learns interesting facts about Hoffmann's personal relationships with his homeland and with his fellow artists Otto Wagner, Koloman Moser and Dagobert Peche, as well as with his clients such as the Wittgenstein, Stoclet, Primavesi and Mauthner families.

As the only comprehensive, authentic source on Josef Hoffmann's life and work, his descriptions are of enormous importance and mark the starting point for any study of Hoffmann's work. Accompanied by a comprehensive commentary, his autobiography is now being made available to a wider public for the first time.

Annotated new edition of the book written by Josef Hoffmann Self-biography , published on the occasion of the exhibition jointly organized by the Moravian Gallery in Brno and the MAK Vienna in the Josef Hoffmann Birthplace in Brtnice (CZ). Josef Hoffmann: Inspiration see (Permanent exhibition since June 16, 2009). The Josef Hoffmann Museum is a branch of the Moravian Gallery in Brno and the MAK Vienna.
