The task of this edition is to make a previously unpublished manuscript by Gottfried Semper, which is in the MAK collection, available to the specialist audience for the first time, complete with scientific notes. The present work, written in English in London in 1852, was donated to the MAK by Gottfried Semper in 1867 and has been kept in the MAK library and art print collection ever since. The publication includes a transcription of the manuscript with scientific apparatus as well as introductory texts by leading international art theorists Andrew Benjamin and Harry Francis Mallgrave. This book represents a significant contribution to the scientific analysis of the founding period of modern architecture and design and a challenge for the MAK.
With contributions from Andrew Benjamin, Harry Francis Mallgrave, Peter Noever, Kathrin Pokorny-Nagel.
