From the 53 stations of the Tokaido (Hoeido-Tokaido): Mount Sayo no Nakayama (Station 25)
The special thing about this steep path through the Sayo-no-Naka Mountains is probably the boulder in the middle of the path. There is a legend associated with it that says that a pregnant woman was once attacked by robbers at this point. She lost her child and had to bury him here. For this reason, the stone is said to cry every night, which is why it is called "yonaki ishi" (stone that cries in the night). There are some characters carved on the stone, but according to written sources it is the prayer formula " namu Amida-butsu"
